Miracle From Heaven? What is Miracle?

Bismillah was shalatu was salamu 'ala Rasulillah, wa ba'du,
Miracle | Miracle From Heaven? What is Miracle?

Miracle | Miracle From Heaven? What is Miracle?

The word miracle [المعجزة] derives from the word al-Ajz [العجز] which means it can not afford to do anything. While in syar'i terms, miracles are extraordinary events that God gave to His prophets as proof of their prophetic status.
(ar-Rusul wa ar-Risalat, Umar al-Ashbar, p. 86).

Ar-Razi gives the definition of miracles in urf (community term),

Incredible events, accompanied by challenges, without any resistance.
(Lawami 'al-Anwar al-Bahiyah, 2/289)

Meanwhile, in the Qur'an Allah calls miracles by verse.

Allah says,

And We had certainly given Moses nine evident signs,...

The meaning of the word 'evident' in the above verse is a miracle.

The Cause of Miracles

All miracles, coming from Allah. The creature is incapable of creating it. Pure gift from Allah.

It's just, judging by the reason, we can conclude there are 2 kind of miracles:

[1] The miracle given by Allah to his Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam before the prophet faced his enemy. As Moses (Musa) ' alayhis shalatu was salam. He was given several miracles before he faced Pharaoh (Fir'aun).

Allah says the beginning of Moses (Musa) was made a prophet,

But when he came to it, he was called from the right side of the valley in a blessed spot - from the tree, "O Moses, indeed I am Allah, Lord of the worlds."
And [he was told], "Throw down your staff." But when he saw it writhing as if it was a snake, he turned in flight and did not return. [ Allah said], "O Moses, approach and fear not. Indeed, you are of the secure.
Insert your hand into the opening of your garment; it will come out white, without disease. And draw in your arm close to you [as prevention] from fear, for those are two proofs from your Lord to Pharaoh and his establishment. Indeed, they have been a people defiantly disobedient."

Allah showed Moses (Musa) some of his miracles, such as a cane turned into a snake, a hand put into a collar when it was issued a white light, and he was asked to clasp his hands in fear. After that, he was ordered to go to Pharaoh (Fir'aun).

[2] The miracles Allah gave because of the demands of the unbelievers who opposed it.

As happened to the Prophet Soleh 'alayhis salam, his people challenged him to make the camel from the rock.

Allah tells this in Surat as-Syu'ara,

Thamud denied the messengers
When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear Allah ?
Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

Then they asked for proof of Soleh's prophethood, and proved by Allah,

They said, "You are only of those affected by magic.
You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful."
He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day.

Ibn Katsir explains,

The ahli Tafseer say that the tsamud gathered in the center of their crowd. Then came the Prophet Soleh, invited them to return to Allah, advised them and commanded them to be monotheists (Tauhid).

Then they challenge,

'Try it, can you take out a camel with characteristic same as this from this big rock .. !! '

Answer the Prophet Soleh,

'If I can bring in as you ask, will you believe in what I say?'

'Yes, we believe!' Answer them.

Then Prophet Soleh took their promise. Then the Prophet Soleh did the prayers  (salat) in his mosque, then prayed (ask / dua) to God to grant their request. Finally, God commanded the big stone to break and bring out a large camel as requested by the unbeliever.
(Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 6/157).

Thus, Allahu a'lam.
