Bismillah was shalatu was salamu 'ala Rasulillah, wa ba'du,
The term salaat bardain mentioned in the hadith narrated by Bukhari Muslim and others, from the friend of Abu Musa al-Ash'ari radhiyallahu 'anhu , the Prophet sallallaahu' alaihi wa sallam said,
من صلى البردين دخل الجنة
Who prays at two time barad then will go to heaven.
(Narrated by Bukhari 574 & Muslim 1470)
In the ad-Darimi history, there are additional,
قيل لأبى محمد: ما البردين? قال: الغداة والعصر
Abu Muhammad was asked, "What are two barad times?"
He replied: "Subh and Asr."
(Sunan ad-Darimi, 4/291).
Dr. Musthofa Dib Bugha explained,
"البردين" صلاة الفجر وصلاة العصر سميا بذلك لأنهما يفعلان في بردي النهار وهما طرفاه حين يطيب الهوا "
Salat al-Bardain is the Subh prayer and asr prayer. So named, because this prayer is done in two cold days flanking during the day, when the weather is cool air.
(Ta'liqat 'ala Shahih Bukhari, hadith No. 548).
The purpose of this hadith is to give motivation for the Muslims to keep the prayers at dawn subh and asr. For men in mosques and for women trying to keep it on time.
Allah Ta'ala said,
حافظوا على الصلوات والصلاة الوسطى وقوموا لله قانتين
"Maintain with care the [obligatory] prayers and [in particular] the middle prayer and stand before Allah, devoutly obedient."
According to the most appropriate opinion, the purpose of that prayer in the above verse is the asr prayer. This is based on the hadith of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam when the events of war Ahzab,
شغلونا عن الصلاة الوسطى, صلاة العصر
"Those who are infidels of Quraish have occupied us so that we can not perform the wustha prayer, (ie) asr prayer."
(Narrated by Bukhari 2931 and Muslim 627)
This shows how great the attention of the Shariah for the Muslims to keep the prayers asr.
Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam also said,
لن يلج النار أحد صلى قبل طلوع الشمس, وقبل غروبها
"It will not enter the hell of one who does the prayer before sunrise (ie dawn prayer/subh) and before sunset (ie asr prayer). "
(Muslim 644).
May Allah make us istiqamah in keeping the 5 daily prayers, especially the dawn/subh prayers and asr.
