Little Shirk Sin

If someone carries a small sin of shirk until he dies, can his little shirk sins be forgiven?

Answer:

Bismillah was shalatu was salam 'ala Rasulillah, wa ba'du,

Little Shirk, even though the name has an additional "small/little" word, but the sin is greater than the big sin in general.

And the limitations of small shirk are 3 - we conclude from Dr. Sulaiman ar-Ruhaili when delivering the Daurah as-Syar'iyah Preamble in Lombok (10 Dec 2018). He mentioned that there are 3 small shirk restrictions:

[1] All acts which are called shirk by the Shari'a - the Qur'an and the Sunna - but do not cause the person to come out of Islam.
Like swearing by the name other than Allah.

The Prophet, said,

Who swears by calling other than Allah, he is kafir (unbeliever) or musyrik.
(Narrated by Tirmidzi 1535 and handed over by al-Albani)

The Prophet ﷺ called who swear by mentioning a name other than Allah as shirk/kafir, even though this action did not cause the person to come out of Islam.

[2] Actions that can lead to great shirk

Like slaughtering animals in places that are usually used by idolaters for offerings or sacrificing other than Allah.

[3] Believing that "something" is a reason to get a certain goal, luck or bad luck, even though it is not a cause or the reason.

For Examples, making amulets as a reason to get wealth, even though that is not the reason for getting wealth.

Furthermore,

can shirk sin be forgiven by God?

Ulama agree that the act of small shirk does not cause someone to get out of Islam. It's just that they differ in opinion, whether little shirk sins are forgiven or not.

Allah says,

"Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin."

This verse speaks of the status of shirk sin. And scholars differ in understanding this verse.

First, that the sin of shirk will not be forgiven by Allah.

Both big shirk and small shirk, both visible shirk and vague shirk. Because the verse above confirms that Allah does not forgive the sin of shirk and the editorial of the verse is general, includes all forms of shirk.

This is the opinion of Shaykhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah. He said,

Some say, for shirk sin, there is no forgiveness, either big shirk or small shirk, based on the general proposition of the Koran. Even though small shirkers die under Muslim conditions, their actions will not be forgiven. But he will be punished, even though after that he enters heaven.
(ar-Rad ala al-Bakri, 1/301).

Second, small shirk sins can be forgiven by Allah.

This is an opinion implied by Ibnul Qayim.

In Ightsatul Lahafan, Ibnul Qayim explained,

Najis (Unclean) shirk is 2: Najis mughalathah (heavy) and Najis mukhaffafah (light). najis mughalathah is big shirk, which Allah Ta'ala will not forgive. Because Allah will not forgive if he is partners. Whereas najis mukhaffafah is a small shirk, such as a small riya (Show off), pretending to be good in the presence of beings (makhluk), or swearing in the name of beings, or fearing and wishing for beings.
( Ightsatul Lahafan , p. 59).

Imam Ibn Uthaymeen was once asked,

Does the verse above (an-Nisa: 48) include small shirk?

"Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin."

His answer,

The scholars differed on this issue. Among those who say, the verse includes all shirk, including small ones, such as swearing by calling other than Allah, then Allah will not forgive him. While for major sins, such as drinking khamr or adultery, all of these sins can be forgiven. If Allah wills, He can forgive, or punish him.
(Majmu 'Fatawa Ibn Uthaimin, 2/204).

Thus, Allahu a’lam.
