The meaning of the verse 'Laa Ikraaha fid Diin' (There is no compulsion to enter Islam)

Question :
Please explain, what is the meaning of the verse 'Laa Ikraaha fid in' which is in Surat al-Baqarah: 256?

Answer:

Bismillah was shalatu was greeting 'ala Rasulillah, wa ba'du,

We write the verse in question,

لا إكراه في الدين قد تبين الرشد من الغي فمن يكفر بالطاغوت ويؤمن بالله فقد استمسك بالعروة الوثقى لا انفصام لها

There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong. So whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.

We note the sentence snippet,

'There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion (Islam)'

Then continued fragments of sentences,

'indeed the right path is clear from the wrong path. (The right course has become clear from the wrong)'

According to al-Hafdiz Ibn Kathir, the second sentence is an explanation for the first sentence. There is no compulsion to convert to Islam, because truth and falsehood are very clear, so there is no need to be forced to enter it.

Ibn Kathir said,

That is, do not force anyone to convert to Islam, because the truth of Islam is very clear, visible, and very clear evidence, so it does not need to force anyone to enter it. But the person who gets instructions from God to convert to Islam, Allah expands his chest, Allah gives light to his knowledge, then he will convert to Islam on the basis of getting an explanation.

On the contrary, the person whom Allah blind his heart, Allah will lock the hearing and sight, it will not benefit him when he is converted to Islam by being forced.
(Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 1/682).

Furthermore,

some scholars of commentators mention sabab nuzul this verse. Among those mentioned by al-Baghawi, a history from Said bin Jubair, from Ibn Abbas radhiyallahu 'anhuma,

There are Ansar women who always fail to have children, they swear (nadzar),

If there are born children who survive, they will be included in Jewish religion.

When Islam came, there were several descendants of Ansar people who lived with Jews. During the expulsion of the Banu Nadzir, there were several Ansar offspring with Jews, so that the Ansar wanted to force them to withdraw.

Jews say, "These are our children, our friends."

Then Allah revealed the verse above. Then the Prophet, said,

قد خيّر أَصْحَابَكُمْ فَإِنِ اخْتَارُوكُمْ فَهُمْ مِنْكُمْ وإن اختاروهم ، فهم منهم

God has given a choice for your descendants, if they choose you they are part of you. But if they choose Jews, then they are part of the Jews.
(Ma'alim at-Tanzil, Tafsir al-Baghawi, 1/313).

Thus, Allah a'lam.
