One of the favors that Allah gives to humans is animals.
And the grazing livestock He has created for you; in them is warmth and [numerous] benefits, and from them you eat.
And for you in them is [the enjoyment of] beauty when you bring them in [for the evening] and when you send them out [to pasture].
And they carry your loads to a land you could not have reached except with difficulty to yourselves. Indeed, your Lord is Kind and Merciful.
And [He created] the horses, mules and donkeys for you to ride and [as] adornment. And He creates that which you do not know.
Allah affirmed in the verse above, one of the benefits of pets is
'And for you in them is [the enjoyment of] beauty when you bring them in [for the evening] and when you send them out [to pasture].'
Even if this animal is not ridden, he can be an attractive sight for the owner. The Javanese call it 'klangenan'. Treated only to be seen and used as decoration. This kind of function is in domestic birds.
In addition to the above verse, there is a hadith that explicitly allows us to raise birds. The Hadith is from the sahabah Anas bin Malik radhiallahu ' anhu. He had a younger brother who was a child, named Abu Umair. The little brother has a small red beak bird, named Nughair.
Anas told me,
The Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam is the best man of character. I have a younger brother, his name is Abu Umair. His age is approaching the new age (weaned). When the Messenger of Allaah 'alaihi wa sallam came, he called,' O Abu Umair, what's wrong with Nughair? ' Nughair is a bird used by Abu Umair's toys.
(Narrated by Bukhari 6203, Muslim 2150, and others).
Al-Hafidz Ibn Hajar mentioned several lessons that were concluded from this. among the ones he mentioned,
"(This Hadith proposition) may keep birds in cages or the like."
(Fathul Bari, 10/584).
As-Syarwani (d. 1301 AH) - the Syafiiyah Islamic scholar - said,
"Al-Qaffal was asked about the law of raising birds in a cage, to hear his voice or something. He replied, it was permissible as long as the owner paid attention to the needs of the bird, because the law was the same as that of tied cattle. "(Hasyiyah as-Syarwani, 9/210).
Questions about the law of raising birds have also been conveyed to Imam Ibn Baz. His answer,
"It is not a problem to keep birds, as long as they do not tyrannize them and be treated well in giving food or drink. Both parrots, pigeons, chickens or other pets, provided with good conditions and not to tyrannize. Either the animals are kept in ponds, cages or aquariums like fish for example. Allah knows best."
Fatâwa Islamiyyah (4/596).

Then there are some things that need to be considered when maintaining birds, besides fulfilling their needs,
First, it is prohibited to waste
Islam forbids humans to waste in any matter. Including waste in hobby matters.
Second, don't spend time just for birds.
It is as if humans have become servants to the bird, until neglect him from other activities.
Previously the Prophet Sulaiman had a pet horse that he loved so much.
And to David We gave Solomon. An excellent servant, indeed he was one repeatedly turning back [to Allah ].
[Mention] when there were exhibited before him in the afternoon the poised [standing] racehorses.
And he said, "Indeed, I gave preference to the love of good [things] over the remembrance of my Lord until the sun disappeared into the curtain [of darkness]."
[He said], "Return them to me," and set about striking [their] legs and necks.
Because the horse neglected Sulaiman from Allah, then he slaughtered the horse.
Allahu a’lam
