Prohibition of Refusing Perfume
Prohibition of Refusing Fragrance Oil
Question:
Is it true that if we are offered by someone a perfume, we cannot refuse it? What if we are not strong with the smell, because it doesn't suit our taste ...?

Prohibition of refusing perfume is mentioned in the hadith from Abu Hurairah radhiyallahu ' anhu, the Prophet sallallaahu' alayhi wa sallam said,
Who is offered (By someone a) perfume, do not reject it. Because perfume is lightly received, and smells good .
(Narrated by Ahmad 8264, Nasai 5276 and dishonored by Syuaib al-Arnauth).
To receive perfume gifts, we do not need to spend a lot of effort, like other big prizes. Like animal gifts or heavy objects that might be difficult to move. (Hasyiyah as-Sindi for Musnad Ahmad, 14/16).
Also mentioned in another hadith from Ibn Umar, Allaah ' anhuma, the Prophet sallallaahu' alaihi wa sallam said,
There are 3 things that should not be rejected, pillows to sit, perfume, and milk. (HR. Turmudzi 3020, al-Baghawi 3173, and al-Albani's conviction)
In addition to the prohibition above, also mentioned in the authentic hadith, the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam never refused to offer perfume. Every time He is given perfume, He always receives it.
A tabi'in ulama, Tsumamah bin Abdillah told me,
Anas never refused to give perfume. Anas said that the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam did not reject perfume.
(HR. Bukhari 2582, Turmudzi 3019 and others).

Why are we forbidden to reject it (Parfume or fragrance oil)?
Ulama have different opinions about the reason why perfume is prohibited from being rejected?First opinion, we are forbidden to refuse perfume, the meaning is an order that we always use perfume. The goal, so that we can always be in a fragrant condition. As the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam always used perfume, so that he could always work (interact) with angels, and angels likes the fragrant smell. This is the opinion of Ibn Batthal.
Al-Hafidz Ibn Hajar quoted Ibn Batthal's statement,
Ibn Batthal said, the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam never refused perfume, because He always maintained the condition to munajat (Interact) with angels. Because of that, He did not eat onions or similar odorous foods.
However, this opinion was commented on by al-Hafidz Ibn Hajar, that if this reason is accepted, of course, it will apply specifically to the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam. Because the one who always works (Interact) with the Angel is only Him. Even though it is not permissible to refuse perfume, it also applies to all people.
(Fathul Bari, 5/209).
Second opinion, that this prohibition is to pay attention to the feeling condition of the giver of perfume. Because when the prize is rejected, it could be that he is hurt. Therefore, in the hadith of Abu Hurairah radi 'anhu above, the Prophet sallallaahu' alaihi wa sallam prohibited from refusing the perfume to mention the reason why perfume gift, because this thing lightly accepted, so that should not be rejected.
As an example of its application, as mentioned in the hadith from Ibn Umar, concerning 3 things that should not be rejected. These three things, pillows for sitting, perfume, and milk are the first meals that the host gives to his newly arrived guests. Materially, the value is very cheap. Even if it is very cheap, when it is given as an appreciation from the host, guests should not reject it, so as not to hurt the feeling of the giver.
In Syarah Sunan Turmudzi, the statement of Imam at-Thibi was quoted as saying.
At-Thibi said, 'The host wants to glorify his guest with a seat cushion, perfume, and milk. This prize is of little value, therefore, it is not appropriate to be rejected. '
(Tuhfatul Ahwadzi, 8/61).
From Abdullah bin Mas'ud, the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam said,
"Meet (Fulfill) the invitation of the inviting person. Do not reject the gift and do not beat a Muslim. "
(Ahmad 3838, Ibn Hibban 5603 and hated by Shuaib al-Arnauth).
Also mentioned in other narrations, from Umar bin Khatab radhiallahu 'anhu , he said,
That once the Prophet gave something to me then I told the Prophet,
"Leave it to the poorer than me".
The Prophet then said,
"Accept it. If you get a gift of wealth even though you don't ask for it or don't expect it then accept it. If you dont get it, dont expect it"
(Muttafaq alaih)

What is the status of this ban?
Jumhur ulama said that the ban was a Makruh ban and NOT a Haram prohibition on illegitimacy. As explained by Ibn Abdil Bar in at-Tamhid (1/273). So, if there are other reasons that make it difficult for us to receive perfume, for example, because the reason is not strong enough with the smell or the smell is not according to taste, we are allowed to reject it.
Thus, Allahu a’lam.
