Preamble
Honest is a phrase that we often hear and talk about. However, it may be that the conversation covers only the outside and has not touched on the core discussion of the honest meaning itself. Moreover, honesty case is a matter related to many problems of Islam, whether it is aqidah, morality or muamalah; where the latter has many branches, such as buying and selling affairs, debts, oaths, and so on.
Honest is a commendable trait. God praises those who have an honest nature and promise abundant rewards for them. Included in honest is honest with God, honest with fellow and honest to self. As it is contained in a saheeh hadith that the Prophet said,
"Be ye honest, for verily it brings to righteousness, and righteousness brings to heaven. A person who is always honest and strives to be honest, ultimately written in the sight of God as a person who is always honest. And keep away lies because the lie leads to immorality, and immorality leads to hell. Someone who always lies and always lies, until finally written on the side of God as a liar. "
Honest Definition
Honestly means the harmony between news and reality. So, if a news matches the circumstances (Reality), it is said to be Honest or truthful, but if not, then it is said to be a lie. Honesty is in speech, there is also in deed, as one who performs an act, certainly in accordance with that in his mind. A man who does riya' (Showing Off) is not said to be an honest man because he has revealed something different from what he hides (within himself). Likewise a hypocrite (Munafik) is not said to be an honest man because he shows himself as a monotheist (tawhid), but vice versa. The same is true of the Bid'ah (Innovation in ibadah); is outwardly visible as a follower of the Prophet, but essentially he disguises him. Clearly, honesty is the nature of a believer, while his opponent, a lie, is a hypocrite.
Imam Ibnul Qayyim said, Faith is the principle of honesty (truth) and nifaq is a principle of lying. Then, never to meet between lies and faith but will contradict each other. Allah preaches that nothing is beneficial to a servant and who is able to save him from the doom (Azab), except his honesty (the truth).
Allah says,
Allah will say, "This is the Day when the truthful will benefit from their truthfulness." For them are gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever, Allah being pleased with them, and they with Him. That is the great attainment."
"And the one who has brought the truth and [they who] believed in it - those are the righteous."
Benefits Honesty
The Prophet urged his people to always be honest because honesty is the preamble of noble character that will direct the owner to the morality, as explained by the Prophet,
"Verily verity brings to righteousness."
Virtue is everything that includes the meaning of goodness, obedience to God, and doing good to others.
Honest nature is the address of Islam, the scales of faith, the basis of religion, and also the mark of perfection for the owner of that trait For him a high position in the world and the hereafter. With his honesty, a servant will attain the degree of noble and survive of safe against of all ugliness.
Honesty always brings a blessing, as cited in the hadith narrated from Hakim bin Hizam of the Prophet, he said,
"Sellers and buyers are given a chance to think while they have not separated. If they are honest and make an explanation of the merchandise, they (Both) will get a blessing in their buying and selling. On the contrary, if they cheat and keep secrets of what should be explained about the merchandise, then the blessing (Berkah) will be erased. "
In everyday life -and this is a clear proof- we find an honest man in his social life (muamalah in trading for example) with other people, his sustenance is smooth, others racing to Muamalah (Trading) with him, for being at peace with him and participating in the glory and name the good one. With so perfect for him happiness world and akherat.
We do not find an honest man, but someone else is happy with him, praising him. Both friends and foes feel at ease with him. Unlike liars. His friend himself does not feel safe, moreover the enemy or his opponent. How beautiful is the saying of an honest man, and how bad a liar's words are.
Honest people are given trust in the form of property, rights and also secrets. If then make a mistake, his honesty -with God's permission- will be able to save him. While a liar, a piece would not be trusted. If it is sometimes expected that honesty did not bring peace and trust. With honesty it is the covenant and calm the heart. Anyone who is honest in speaking, answering, commanding (for the ma'ruf or Goodness), forbidding (from the mungkar or evil), reading or recite Quran, dhikr, giving, taking, then he in the sight of God and all human beings are said to be honest, beloved, respected and trusted. His testimony is truth, the law is fair, his muamalah (social life) bring benefits, discussion (his majlis) give barakah (Blessing) because far from riya ' (Showing off) looking for a good name. Not wishing for his deeds but to God, both in his prayers, his zakat, his fast, his hajj, his silence, and his conversation are all for Allah alone. No demand for reward or gratitude except to God. Convey the truth even though it is bitter and does not care about the reproaches of the detractors in their honesty.
And no one associates with him but feels safe and trust in himself, for his property and his family. So he is the guardian of the trust for the living, the wills holder of the dead and the keeper of the treasury to be entitled to the rightful.
A believer and honest, do not lie and say nothing except goodness. How many verses and hadiths advocate for honesty and truth, as the following words of God,
"O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true."
Allah will say, "This is the Day when the truthful will benefit from their truthfulness." For them are gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever, Allah being pleased with them, and they with Him. That is the great attainment. "
Among the believers are men true to what they promised Allah . Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow [to the death], and among them is he who awaits [his chance]. And they did not alter [the terms of their commitment] by any alteration -"
"Obedience and good words. And when the matter [of fighting] was determined, if they had been true to Allah, it would have been better for them."
The Prophet said, "Leave what doubts you to those who do not doubt you, verily honesty, (bring) calmness and lies, (bring) doubts."
Kinds of Honesty
- Honest in intention and will. This goes back to sincerity. If an Act is interfered with the interests of the world, it will undermine the honesty of intent, and the perpetrator may be said to be a liar, as the story of three people confronted with God, a mujahid, a qari ', and a philanthropist. God judges all three have lied, not on their deeds but on their intentions and their wills.
- Honest in speech. It is obligatory for a servant to keep his tongue, not to say unless it is true and honest. Righteousness in speech is the most visible and honest kind of honesty amongst all sorts of honesty.
- Be honest in your determination and fulfill your promise. For example, as one person says , "If God gives me treasure, I will spend everything in the way of Allah." So this is determination. Sometimes true, but sometimes hesitant or false. This is as God says: Among the believers are men true to what they promised Allah . Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow [to the death], and among them is he who awaits [his chance]. And they did not alter [the terms of their commitment] by any alteration -(Surat al-Ahzab: 23) In another verse, Allah says,
And among them are those who made a covenant with Allah, [saying], "If He should give us from His bounty, we will surely spend in charity, and we will surely be among the righteous".But when he gave them from His bounty, they were stingy with it and turned away while they refused. " (Surah al-Tawbah: 75-76) - Honest in deeds, That is to be balanced between the outward and the inner, so as not to be different between the act of outward and the inner act, as Mutharrif says, "If the same is between the mind of a servant and his outward, then Allah will say, 'This is my true / honest servant.' "
- Honest in the position of religion. This is the highest position, as honest in fear and hope, in love and trust (Tawakkul). These matters have a strong foundation, and will appear to be understood by its nature and purpose. If a person becomes perfect with his honesty it will be said that this man is true and honest, as Allah says, The believers are only the ones who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then doubt not but strive with their properties and their lives in the cause of Allah . It is those who are the truthful.
(Surat al-Hujurat: 15)
The realization of these cases requires hard work. It is impossible for a person to reach this position until he understands his essence perfectly. Each position (condition) has its own circumstances. There are times when it is becomes weak, there are times when it becomes strong. In strong times, it is said to be an honest man. And honest in every position (condition) is very heavy. Sometimes in certain circumstances he is honest, but anywhere else he acts otherwise. One sign of honesty is to hide obedience and distress, and to be unhappy for others to know.
Khatimah
People who always do the truth and honesty, undoubtedly words, deeds, and circumstances always show it. God has commanded the Prophet to ask Him to make every step of his way above the truth as God's word,
And say, "My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority."'
Allah also preached about the Prophet Ibrahim who begged him to be a good speech.
"And grant me a reputation of honor among later generations."
The essence of honesty in this regard is a right that has been established, and connected to God. He will come to Him, so that his reward will be found in this world and the hereafter. God has explained about those who do good, and praises them for what they have done, whether in the form of faith, alms or patience. That they are honest and true people. Allah says,
Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous.
Here it is clearly explained that the truth is visible in the external action and this is the position in Islam and the Faith. Honesty and sincerity are both realizations of Islam and security.
The person who reveals Islam in dhahir (appearance) is divided into two: believers (mukmin) and hypocrites (Moonafik). What distinguishes between the two is the honesty and truth of his belief. Therefore, God calls the essence of faith and characterizes it with truth and honesty, as God says,
"For the poor emigrants who were expelled from their homes and their properties, seeking bounty from Allah and [His] approval and supporting Allah and His Messenger, [there is also a share]. Those are the truthful."
The opposite of honest is a lie. And a lie is a great sin, as God says,
"Then whoever argues with you about it after [this] knowledge has come to you - say, "Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then supplicate earnestly [together] and invoke the curse of Allah upon the liars [among us]."
Lies is a sign of hypocrisy as mentioned in the hadith narrated by Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah said,
"The signs of the hypocrites are three things, that is when they speak they lies, if they promise they deny (break the promise) and if they are given a Trust he betrays."
(Narrated by Bukhari, Kitab-Faith : 32)
Lies will lead to disobedience, and disobedience will plunge into hell. The danger of lying is enormous, and the punishment that it causes is so great, it is obligatory for us to be honest in our words, deeds and muamalah (Social Activities). Thus if we always stay away from lies, we will surely get the reward of being honest and safe from the torment of liars. Waallahu A'lam.
"So who is more unjust than one who lies about Allah and denies the truth when it has come to him? Is there not in Hell a residence for the disbelievers?
And the one who has brought the truth and [they who] believed in it - those are the righteous.
They will have whatever they desire with their Lord. That is the reward of the doers of good -
That Allah may remove from them the worst of what they did and reward them their due for the best of what they used to do."
