Knowing the City of Mecca and Its virtue
The Naming of the City of Mecca
Mecca, the name comes from the word: imtakka which means to urge or push. This city is called Mecca because humans are crowded there
( Mu'jam al-Buldan, said: Mecca ).
In the Qur'an Allah calls it Bakkah. Allah says,
Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Makkah - blessed and a guidance for the worlds.
The city of Mecca is called Bakkah from the word bakka - yabukku , meaning to suppress. Because Mecca pressed the necks of arrogant people
( Jalalain Tafseer for QS. Ali Imran: 96).

The city of Mecca also has another name, including:
1. Ummul Qura (city center), Allah says,
"And thus We have revealed to you an Arabic Qur'an that you may warn the Mother of Cities [Makkah] and those around it and warn of the Day of Assembly, about which there is no doubt. A party will be in Paradise and a party in the Blaze."
The city of Mecca is called Ummul Qura because it is the most crowded city.
2. Al-Balad al-Amin (a secure city) , Allah says,
" And [by] this secure city [Makkah],"
3. Ma'ad (place to back) , Allah says,
" Indeed, [O Muhammad], He who imposed upon you the Qur'an will take you back to a place of return. Say, "My Lord is most knowing of who brings guidance and who is in clear error."
Some commentators say, what is meant by a place of return is Mecca.
( Tafseer Jalalain, for QS. Al-Qasas: 85)
4. Al-Baitul Haram , Allah says,
" And [mention, O Muhammad], when We designated for Abraham the site of the House, [saying], "Do not associate anything with Me and purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who stand [in prayer] and those who bow and prostrate. "
